Abstract

Steel structures on ships and offshore buildings are highly susceptible to corrosion due to exposure to seawater containing high levels of chloride ions, particularly in aggressive marine-brackish environments such as the Mahakam Delta in East Kalimantan. These conditions have the potential to accelerate the degradation of hull plate thickness, reduce structural reliability, and increase maintenance costs and the risk of operational disruptions. This study aims to analyze the optimal zinc anode requirements for the Elnusa Samudera 8 Accommodation Barge cathodic protection system, with reference to NACE and DNV standards. This includes determining the total protection current, mass, number, and configuration of anodes according to the design life. The research method involved calculating the protection current based on the wetted area, design current density, anode capacity, and evaluating the protection distribution and efficiency. The analysis results show that the cathodic protection system with 82 zinc anode units is capable of providing a protection current of 27.65 A with an efficiency of nearly 100% and a protection life of five years. This system reduces the corrosion rate to below the safety limit and has the potential to extend the structure's lifespan to more than 20 years through periodic anode replacement. These findings indicate that the cathodic protection system design implemented has met the relevant technical requirements and design standards.
